Parc Charruyer is a verdant oasis nestled in the heart of La Rochelle, offering both locals and visitors a tranquil escape from the bustling city. Spanning approximately 40 hectares, this expansive park stretches along the city’s western edge, following the path of the old fortifications. Established between 1887 and 1890, the park owes its existence to a generous bequest from Mademoiselle Adèle Charruyer, daughter of shipowner Étienne Charruyer. She donated the land to the city with the intention of creating a public green space, transforming former military grounds into a haven of nature and relaxation.

Designed in the English landscape style, Parc Charruyer features meandering pathways shaded by mature trees, serene streams, and picturesque bridges. The park is traversed by two small rivers, the Lafond and the Fétilly, which add to its charm and support a diverse ecosystem. Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks, jogs, or bike rides along the well-maintained trails, making it a popular spot for outdoor activities and family outings.

A notable feature within the park is the Charles-Édouard Beltrémieux animal park, established in 1950. Covering four hectares, this urban zoo is home to a variety of animals, including local breeds such as the Baudet du Poitou donkey, Marans chickens, and Poitou white geese. Additionally, visitors can observe deer, goats, peacocks, and various bird species, many of which roam freely or reside in spacious enclosures. The animal park serves both as a conservation area and an educational resource, particularly for children and families.
