The Berat Iconography Museum is in Berat, Albania, inside the Cathedral of the Dormition of St. Mary at the top of Berat Castle. It is a museum of Orthodox religious art, set within a church building rather than a separate gallery space. The collection centers on icons, carved wooden screens, liturgical objects, and other church items that were gathered from religious sites in the region. Visitors enter through the castle's upper area and then step into a compact interior where the display feels closely tied to the building itself.

The museum matters because it preserves some of the best-known icon painting connected to Berat, including works associated with Onufri and other Albanian craftsmen. Inside, visitors notice the painted panels, gold details, carved wood, and the quiet atmosphere created by the chapel setting. It suits people interested in Byzantine and Orthodox art, religious heritage, or a short stop that adds context to a visit to Berat Castle. Those looking for a long museum visit can skip it, but for a focused art stop, it fits well.

History and Significance of Berat Iconography Museum

The museum is located inside the Cathedral of the Dormition of St. Mary, completed in 1797 within Berat Castle. The cathedral itself replaced earlier churches on the same sacred site, making it an enduring centre of worship for the castle's Orthodox community.

The museum was established in 1986 to preserve and display Albania's most important collection of icons and ecclesiastical objects. Its centrepiece is the wooden iconostasis carved by Master Joan Cetiri and decorated with icons by Onufri and other great painters of the 16th to 19th centuries. The museum highlights the Berat school of icon painting, renowned for its elegance, colour, and expressive detail.

Many of the icons once belonged to churches throughout the region, rescued from abandonment or decay during turbulent periods of Albania's history. Their collection in one place not only preserves religious heritage but also demonstrates the artistic brilliance that flourished in Berat across the centuries.

Things to See and Do in Berat Iconography Museum

Begin with the cathedral itself-its stone walls, arched windows, and tall bell tower create a solemn and atmospheric entrance to the museum. Inside, the majestic iconostasis dominates the hall with its intricate carvings and gilded details.

The museum’s collection includes more than 170 icons and liturgical objects. Highlights include works by Onufri, whose bold use of colour and expressive faces make his icons instantly recognisable. Other notable pieces display the craftsmanship of the Cetiri family, Nicola, and David Selenica.

Visitors can spend time admiring the fine metalwork, gospel covers, chalices, and candles that accompany the icons. The soft lighting and wooden interior create a peaceful space well suited for reflection on the artistry and faith embodied in every piece.

"Unfortunately I was here with a power outage and did not get to experience the beauty of all the icons. I had to use my phone's flashlight to be ableto see things... That being said, when in Berat go and see this when exploring the castle. Beautiful history. Not only of the Orthodox Catholic Church....."

"A simple-looking white plaster facade behind a stone-walled enclosure - inside the chapel was bursting with gold icons and incredibly ornatecarvings. The audio was clear and each description clearly indicated in front of the thing being described although sometimes difficult for a layperson to follow on account of me being a geologist and not acquainted with the parts of a church. Definitely worth a visit when in the castle grounds...."

"A national museum located in the heart of the largest castle in the Balkans. The museum has international values, and world-class iconography, carefully managed by M. Pasku. Also the volumetric combination of the church with the museum gives a feeling of grandeur. Prominent architecture between Greek and Byzantine elements. We had the honor to contribute to site-work and academic research, works consisting of architectural survey and scans of the building with lidar & point-cloud technology...."
