MUŻA, Malta's National Community Art Museum, is a vibrant cultural space that blends art, history, and storytelling in the heart of Valletta. Housed within the beautifully restored 16th-century Auberge D'Italie, MUŻA is more than just a museum - it's a celebration of Maltese identity through the lens of visual art. Its name, derived from the Maltese word for “inspiration” and echoing the classical muses of Greek mythology, captures the essence of the experience: a place where heritage and imagination come together.

Opened in 2018 as part of Valletta's European Capital of Culture celebrations, MUŻA redefined what an art museum could be. Instead of presenting art as static, it invites visitors to engage, reflect, and connect with Malta's evolving cultural story. This innovative approach makes it one of the top attractions in Valletta and a highlight of any walking tour of Valletta for art lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

History and Significance

The Auberge D'Italie, where MUŻA is located, was originally constructed in 1574 to house the Italian knights of the Order of St. John. Designed by the famed architect Girolamo Cassar, it exemplifies Valletta's early Baroque elegance with its harmonious proportions, limestone arcades, and peaceful courtyard. Over the centuries, the building served many roles - from government offices to Malta's General Post Office during British rule.

When it reopened as MUŻA, the museum marked a new chapter for the building and for Maltese art. It became a space dedicated to the community, representing not only the great masters of the past but also the voices of modern Maltese artists. This transformation symbolizes the nation's journey from its chivalric and colonial past to a confident, creative present.

Things to See and Do

MUŻA’s collection spans several centuries, from the Renaissance and Baroque periods to contemporary art. Its galleries are organized around four main themes: The Mediterranean, Europe, Empire, and The Artist. Each theme explores Malta’s unique position at the crossroads of cultures, with paintings, sculptures, and installations that tell stories of faith, trade, identity, and transformation.

Among the highlights are works by Mattia Preti, Antoine Favray, and Giuseppe Cali, as well as pieces from Malta's modern and contemporary art scenes. The museum also incorporates multimedia displays and interactive features, encouraging visitors to explore Malta's history through sound, light, and narrative. The blend of old and new - displayed within a structure that itself has lived through centuries - makes MUŻA one of the must-see places in Valletta.

Don’t miss the museum’s central courtyard, a serene open-air space that connects the galleries and offers a quiet spot to pause between exhibits. The in-house café provides a pleasant place for coffee or light meals surrounded by art and architecture.

Reviews Summary

MUŻA - The National Community Art Museum on Merchants Street in Valletta occupies a 1760s knight's palace and presents a range of works from medieval to contemporary Maltese art alongside Baroque masterpieces; visitors note well-planned exhibitions though some say early rooms of contemporary pieces may be less engaging before reaching 18th-century highlights and portraits by artists such as Favray, Vernet, and Tintoretto.

"If you’re visiting Valletta, I highly recommend stopping by MUŻA, the National Community Art Museum of Malta. It’s not a huge museum — you can seeeverything in about an hour and a half (or even an hour if you go quickly) — but it’s well worth the time. The collection is varied and engaging, featuring works by Maltese artists as well as international ones. You’ll find paintings, sculptures, and a range of interesting objects, all well-presented in a beautifully restored historic building. Overall, it’s a great way to experience Malta’s artistic heritage and see some truly lovely pieces of art without spending half a day. Definitely worth a visit while you’re in the area...."

"You walk in expecting a modest little collection — a few paintings, maybe a dusty bust of someone important if you squint. And then suddenly, boom, they hit you with more art than the building can physically handle. It’s like the curators kept saying “Oh, and put this one up too” until every wall had the visual density of a Renaissance flea market. Does it feel cluttered? A little. Do I care? Not really — if the choice is between “too much art” and “not enough art,” I know where I stand. Now, about those little description signs: lovely idea, questionable execution. Sometimes the different language sections aren’t separated into paragraphs. It’s not a disaster, but after a while, you start reading everything twice. The building itself is gorgeous — the kind of place you wish you could rent for a long weekend and pretend you inherited. Staff are friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed, and despite the occasional wall feeling like a visual game of Tetris, the experience is genuinely excellent...."

"Very interesting museum! At first it gives the impression that it is a small gallery, but in fact it is not. The museum has a very interestinginterior - a bonus to the paintings that you will see inside. There are arrows painted on the floor and it is very easy to move from hall to hall. The collection of paintings and sculptures is large and the works are from all periods. We visited it on a Monday at noon and it was very quiet. Entrance - 10 €..."
