Muiderslot Castle
Castle in Amsterdam

Muiderslot Castle, perched at the mouth of the Vecht River just 15 km southeast of Amsterdam, is a medieval fortress steeped in Dutch history. Originally built in 1285 by Count Floris V to control trade routes to Utrecht, the castle witnessed dramatic events—including Floris’s imprisonment and assassination in 1296. Though demolished shortly after, it was rebuilt in the late 14th century by Duke Albert I of Bavaria. Its strategic location and compact square design with four round towers made it a formidable stronghold, later evolving into a refined residence during the Dutch Golden Age.
In the 17th century, Muiderslot became a cultural haven under the poet and historian P.C. Hooft, who hosted the Muiderkring, a circle of artists and intellectuals. Hooft’s influence is still felt in the castle’s elegant rooms, including the Knight’s Hall, where plays were performed, and the Prince’s Room, which once hosted Prince Maurits of Orange. The interiors reflect both medieval austerity and 17th-century sophistication, with canopy beds, celestial globes, and richly carved furniture. Visitors can explore the Tower Route for panoramic views and the Knight’s Route for immersive storytelling.
Outside, the castle is surrounded by a wide moat and beautifully restored gardens. The plum orchard, planted by Hooft in 1620, features 18 varieties of plums and hosts seasonal tastings. The herb and vegetable gardens are divided by a whimsical beech tree tunnel, offering a fairytale-like stroll through history. These gardens once sustained the castle’s kitchen, which still displays hanging herbs, roasting meats, and rustic cookware. The grounds also include a playground and café, making it a family-friendly destination with layers of discovery.
