History and Significance of Han Market

Han Market traces its origins to the early 1900s when it emerged as a modest riverside trading point for fishermen and merchants. Over time, as Da Nang expanded, the market grew into one of the city's most important commercial centres. Its strategic location near the Han River made it ideal for transporting goods, which contributed to its rapid development.

Today, Han Market remains a cultural landmark, symbolising Da Nang's transition from a traditional riverside town into a vibrant modern city. While upgraded and renovated over the decades, the market still retains its original spirit-bustling, welcoming, and filled with the scents and sounds of daily Vietnamese life.

Things to See and Do in Han Market

Visitors can explore two main floors, each offering a different part of the market experience. On the ground floor, you’ll find fresh produce, herbs, seafood, meats, bánh mì stalls, and a colourful array of tropical fruits. This is also the best area to sample local snacks such as bánh bột lọc, dried squid, and Da Nang’s famous fish sauce.

The upper floor is a treasure trove for shoppers. Textiles dominate the scene with stalls offering silk fabrics, áo dài materials, scarves, and tailored clothing. You’ll also find souvenirs, handicrafts, bags, and kitchenware-making it a great place to pick up gifts or mementos. Bargaining is common, and vendors are usually friendly and open to negotiation.

Beyond shopping, Han Market offers a sensory experience-aromas of spices, chatter between buyers and sellers, and the constant bustle that defines a traditional Vietnamese market. Exploring its aisles provides a charming contrast to Da Nang's modern riverfront.

Reviews Summary

Han Market, 119 Trưng Phú, Hải Châu, Đà Nẵng 550000, Vietnam, is a bustling multi-level indoor market in the city center near the Hàn River Bridge where vendors sell fresh produce and local snacks on the ground floor and clothes, fabrics, handbags, souvenirs and housewares upstairs; it's well organized but often very crowded, prices start high so bargaining is expected, vendors are generally helpful though English may be limited, and you can pay with cash, card or some foreign currency.

"Organized, just very crowded. Not recommended to buy pasalubong here to bring home. You can haggle, but the marked down price is still more expensivethan what you would find in Lotte Mart. They accept cash, credit card, and some foreign currency as payment. Great place to get clothes and souvenir. Got two plus sized girlie dresses for 400k vnd, and two plus sized linen pants for 350k vnd after some haggling. Plus size girlie clothes typically range 1.5x to 2x more expensive than that where I'm from. Ref magnets range from 100 to 150 vnd for a pack of six. Some more intricate designs go for 40 to 50k vnd. Again, haggle especially if you are buying a lot. Good, affordable local fare sold on the right side of the ground floor, exiting to Han River. They may not speak English, but I can feel the hospitality and desire to show how the beauty of Vietnam. Our vendor saw how surprised we were by the size of their avocado and gave us a free taste...."
