Fort Ricasoli is one of the must-see places in Kalkara for travellers drawn to Malta's monumental coastal fortifications. Stretching across the dramatic headland at the Grand Harbour entrance, it is the largest fort ever built by the Order of St. John, constructed between 1670 and 1698 to protect Malta from naval assault. Its sweeping curtain walls, bastions, and sea-facing batteries make it an unforgettable sight - a masterpiece of military engineering carved from the island's honey-coloured limestone.

Although partly weathered by centuries of storms and conflict, the fort remains a powerful symbol of Malta's defensive past. It is a great place to visit on a walking tour of Kalkara's fortifications, especially for travellers interested in panoramic views and grand historic landscapes shaped by centuries of warfare, empire, and survival.

History and Significance of Fort Ricasoli

Fort Ricasoli was designed by the Italian military engineer Antonio Maurizio Valperga during the reign of Grand Master Nicolas Cotoner. Built to secure the Grand Harbour - Malta's most strategic asset - the fort closed the defensive chain between Fort St. Elmo and the Cottonera Lines. Its massive land front, angled bastions, and deep ditch represented state-of-the-art military architecture of the late 17th century.

Throughout the centuries, the fort played a crucial role in Malta's military history. During the French blockade of 1798-1800, Maltese insurgents and British forces used the fort as part of their campaign to expel Napoleon's garrison. In British times, Fort Ricasoli housed barracks, artillery emplacements, and later served as a key defensive point during World War II. The fort endured significant wartime damage, including bombardments that impacted its sea-facing structures.

Its immense scale and iconic appearance have also made Fort Ricasoli a favourite filming location. Major productions such as Gladiator, Troy, Agora, Assassin's Creed, and Game of Thrones used its walls and parade grounds as cinematic settings, adding another layer to its cultural legacy.

Things to See and Do in Fort Ricasoli

Because Fort Ricasoli is not normally open to the public, most visits involve admiring the fortress from the outside rather than exploring its interior. The approach road and coastline around the peninsula provide excellent vantage points for viewing the fort's imposing ramparts, sea batteries, and bastioned outline.

From these viewpoints, visitors can appreciate the immense parade ground, the towering land front, and the dramatic sea-facing walls that once bristled with cannon. Even without entry, the fort’s scale and position offer one of the most impressive examples of Baroque military engineering in the Mediterranean.

On rare heritage open days or special events, limited guided access may be offered, allowing visitors to explore selected interior areas - but such opportunities are infrequent.

How to Get There

Fort Ricasoli lies on the eastern headland of Kalkara. Access is limited due to conservation work and film-industry use, but the approach road offers excellent external viewpoints. It is reachable by bus or car from Kalkara and the Three Cities. Parking is available along nearby coastal areas.

Reviews Summary

Fort Rinella in Kalkara is a 19th-century British-built artillery battery where visitors can see two Armstrong 100-ton guns and a collection of shells, swords and rifles related to Malta's military defenses; opening hours show it's open Saturdays 10:00–16:30 and closed most other days, and some displays and the small uniform museum have been under renovation at times, though visitors report an overall good experience.

"We had an absolutely amazing time at Fort Rinella. As soon as we arrived, the incredible tour guide Dave invited us to join his tour — and we’re soglad he did! He was brilliant: incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and genuinely fu y. His passion for the fort’s history really brought everything to life. We wish Dave the very best in his well-deserved retirement and hope he gets to complete everything on his bucket list. He truly made our visit unforgettable. Thank you also for the lovely invitation to return next year to celebrate 35 years since the fort opened — we’d love to come back! Highly recommended to anyone visiting Malta...."

"This was a great place to visit. Our guide, Simon, has a detailed knowledge of the history of the fort and his explanation bought the fort and it'shistory to life. We visited with our 2 children who are 10 and 8 and they really enjoyed the visit too. We visited during part of the restoration of the fort so weren't able to see the Soldier's of the Queen exhibition, but this didn't spoil the visit. After the guided tour the kids were really excited to be able to explore all of the tu els and to imagine what the life of soldiers in the fort was like...."
