Église Saint-Pierre de Caen
Church in Caen

The Église Saint-Pierre de Caen is a prominent Roman Catholic church situated in the heart of Caen, Normandy. Constructed between the 13th and 16th centuries, the church showcases a harmonious blend of Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. Its towering spire, reaching approximately 75 meters, is a notable feature of the city’s skyline.
Throughout its history, the church has played a significant role in Caen’s religious and civic life. Notably, it was the site where a Te Deum was sung in 1593 to celebrate King Henry IV’s conversion to Catholicism, marking the end of the French Wars of Religion. During the French Revolution, the church was repurposed as a Temple of Reason before being restored to Catholic worship in 1795.
The church suffered damage during World War II, particularly on 9 June 1944, when its spire was destroyed by shelling. The spire was subsequently rebuilt in 1957. Today, the Église Saint-Pierre stands as a testament to Caen’s rich historical and architectural heritage, attracting visitors interested in its art, history, and spiritual significance.
