Bodrum Castle
Bodrum Castle

Perched on a rocky peninsula where the Aegean's turquoise waters meet Bodrum's whitewashed coastline, Bodrum Castle (Castle of St. Peter) is a landmark that defines the city's skyline. Built by the Knights of St. John in the early 15th century, it has witnessed crusaders, empires, and modern-day travelers pass through its stone gates. Today, it stands not just as a monument of the past but as one of the top sights in Bodrum, blending ancient heritage with panoramic beauty.

History and Significance

Bodrum Castle was constructed between 1402 and 1522 by the Knights Hospitaller, who used stones from the ruins of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus - one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The castle served as both a fortress and refuge during tumultuous times. Later, under Ottoman rule, it became a military stronghold before transforming into a cultural landmark.

Within its walls, you'll find the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, home to shipwrecks dating back millennia, amphorae, jewelry, and relics from the deep Aegean. The fortress's towers-each named after different nationalities of knights (English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish)-offer stunning views across Bodrum harbor and the distant Greek island of Kos.

Things to See and Do

Exploring Bodrum Castle is a full-sensory experience. Wander through labyrinthine corridors, climb towers for breathtaking views, and step into cool stone chambers filled with maritime artifacts. The museum's glass displays and shipwreck reconstructions bring ancient seafaring to life.

This spot is also a highlight of any walking tour of Bodrum, as it's located near the city's old bazaar, marina, and waterfront cafés. Sunset from the castle walls is unforgettable - a perfect photo opportunity as boats shimmer in the bay below.

"Quite disappointing to be fair!!! €23 entry fee wasn’t really worth it… maybe €10-12 would be better 👍🏻 I’ve noticed since been in Turkey & Bodrum, this country really loves to milk the tourists for there money 💰 a few old towers, a few old pots & statues, somewhat decent views but not a lot to see for the price you pay !!!! I was there almost 2 hours, hoping to find something profoundly interesting & utterly unique but not much else… the highlight was the indoor ship & if you wanted to see the other “ behind the glass ship “ that’s an extra €6 !!!! There are far greater things to spend €23 on but that’s my opinion 👋🏻..."

"This place is huge and beautiful kept. We spent nearly 3 hours combing through every detail and exhibit. The grounds, museum and setting inside thecastle takes you back to life in the country so many years ago. Definitely visit if you are in the Bodrum area. Very less crowds also, so you can really spend some time by yourself. Also, the photos of the harbour from the castle walls will come out so good!..."

"I wasn't expecting a great deal from the castle, so we saved it for a cloudy day, but I was wrong because it is a fascinating place. I forgive, alittle, the Crusaders who in the early 15th Century stole stone from the already 2000 year old Mausoleum of Helicarnassus to refurbish and strengthen the existing ancient castle. But, in doing so, they created the historical and architectural heart of the Bodrum area. The local shipwrecks and their history just add an extra layer of interest and I defy any woman not to try on the golden crown of Artemesia. If, indeed, it was her. It is a very well spent 3 hour alternative to the bars and the beach, so if you are feeling footloose (final photo!), do try it...."
