North Korea, country in East Asia in the northern portion of the Korean peninsula, which is between between the East Sea, or Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. The country is bordered to the north by China and Russia and to the south by the South Korea.

Mountains and valleys characterize most of North Korea.

Tourism in North Korea is tightly controlled by the North Korean government and you are only allowed to visit on and authorized tour. Tourists are usually limited to travelling to the capital Pyongyang and Mount Kumgang.

Beginning in 1998, South Korean and other foreign tourists were allowed to visit the Mount Kumgang Tourist Region. The shooting in 2008 of a South Korean tourist caused tours to the resort by South Koreans being suspended, they have not resumed.
