Angel of the North

The Angel of the North is a contemporary sculpture, designed by Antony Gormley, located in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England.

It was in 1990 that on the site of a former colliery pithead baths was earmarked for the placing of a sculpture. The sculptor Antony Gormley was the winning artist in 1994 and selected to create the sculpture.

It is a steel sculpture of an angel, 20 metres (66 ft) tall, with wings measuring 54 metres (177 ft) across. It is Britain’s largest sculpture, and is said to be the largest angel sculpture in the world.

Gateshead Council’s brief was simple; to create an ambitious artwork that would become a landmark of the region’s character.

With its prime location, on a panoramic hilltop by the A1, the Angel of the North has become one of the most viewed pieces of art in the world. It is seen by more than one person every second.

At the bottom of Monte Urgull on the Paseo Nuevo in San Sebastian is a sculpture by Jorge Oteiza called  Construcción Vacía or Empty Construction. Its slightly longer name is Empty construction with four negative-positive units. Acquired by the City Council in 2001, it was installed on the Paseo Nuevo in October 2002.

Jorge Oteizaa (1908–2003) was a renowned painter, sculptor and writer who was born and brought up close to San Sebastián.
